Meet John Ryan

John Ryan has practiced law in Shiawassee County since 2020. He has been employed as an associate attorney in the McKone Law Firm since 2021. He currently serves as municipal attorney for several communities in Shiawassee and Genesee Counties, and contracts with the Shiawassee County Prosecutor’s office to expand their trial capacity. Prior to his move to private practice, he served as an assistant public defender in the Shiawassee County Public Defender’s office and as a judicial advisory assistant to the Honorable Judge David Newblatt in Michigan’s 7th Judicial Circuit. He was admitted to the Michigan Bar in late 2019. He is currently the president (and previously served as the secretary and treasurer) of the Shiawassee County Bar Association. He is the defense attorney representative to Drug Court and is a member of the Community Corrections Advisory Board.

John, a New Jersey native, earned his bachelor’s degree in political science and sociology from Rutgers University, his master’s degree in political science from Syracuse University, and his law degree from Wake Forest University. As a law student, he molded his hands-on experience to gain extra training in trial advocacy, expungement, and wrongful conviction. He moved to Michigan in 2019 after finishing law school to join his wife (Rachel) in her home state. John, Rachel, and their two children live in Shiawassee County. They enjoy exploring Michigan, watching movies, and spending time with family.
